Editorial Illustration & Metaphor

Editorial illustration is illustrations found within magazines and newspapers. An example of editorial is Kelsey Heinrichs’ work:

There are three types of visual metaphors:

  • Juxtaposition –place an object out of its natural context. The representational space between the object and its new environment might tell a story. This could be really bizarre.

  • Combination – combine two objects together, maybe out of scale, maybe they’re  opposites or out of their natural environment? What story might this tell?

  • Replacement – Consider replacing an object from a composition. It could be placing an animal’s head on a human body, or swapping hands for tools. If you replace a car’s wheels with bricks what might this represent?
